Understanding IFS

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy is an evidence-based, compassionate approach to psychotherapy developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz. IFS is grounded in the idea that our mind is made up of multiple “parts”, each carrying unique emotions, beliefs, and roles that develop in response to our life experiences. While some parts may hold pain, fear, or shame, others take on protective roles to help us function and stay safe.

At the center of this system is the Self — a core state of calm, curiosity, and compassion. The goal of IFS is to help individuals access their Self and build healing, trusting relationships with their inner parts, fostering a sense of inner harmony and self-understanding.

Within you lives both the protector and the wounded — and the Self that can lead them home.

How IFS Helps…

IFS therapy supports clients in exploring and transforming their internal systems in a safe and non-judgmental space. By cultivating awareness of and connection to each part, individuals can release burdens, heal from emotional wounds, and experience greater self-compassion and balance.

IFS has been shown to be effective for those experiencing:

  • Anxiety, depression, and emotional dysregulation

  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress

  • Relationship difficulties and attachment challenges

  • Perfectionism, self-criticism, or shame

  • Feelings of disconnection or inner conflict

Through this process, clients often discover a deeper sense of clarity, peace, and self-trust.

What to Expect in IFS Therapy?

IFS sessions are collaborative and guided by the belief that you already have within you the capacity for healing and growth. Your therapist will help you gently identify and connect with your parts, inviting curiosity and compassion toward each one.

During sessions, your therapist may guide you to:

  • Notice emotions, sensations, or thoughts that arise

  • Identify and name different parts of your internal system

  • Explore the role and intention of each part

  • Develop curiosity and compassion toward those parts

As you learn to recognize how your parts interact, you’ll begin to understand their positive intentions and create space for healing. Over time, parts that once felt stuck or in conflict can find new roles that align with your goals and values.

IFS therapy does not aim to eliminate or suppress any parts, but rather to restore balance and strengthen the Self’s leadership so that your inner system can work together in harmony.

Sessions move at your pace. You are never required to revisit experiences before you feel ready, and therapy is guided collaboratively with your comfort and safety in mind.

Who Is IFS Therapy For?

IFS therapy can be helpful for individuals who:

  • Feel stuck in patterns they do not fully understand

  • Experience strong inner criticism or self-doubt

  • Struggle with anxiety, overwhelm, or emotional reactivity

  • Carry unresolved trauma or painful past experiences

  • Notice internal conflict, such as one part wanting change while another part feels afraid

IFS can be adapted for adolescents and adults and tailored to each individual’s goals and readiness.

IFS is Different from Other Therapies.

Unlike approaches that focus only on changing thoughts or behaviours, IFS works directly with the internal system of parts.

IFS does not aim to eliminate, suppress, or judge any part of you. Instead, it helps you understand the protective intention behind each part and restore balance by strengthening the leadership of the Self.

Many clients find that IFS feels collaborative and empowering because it is based on the belief that there are no “bad” parts — only parts that have taken on protective roles.
